The Choice Review & Contest Info!

Sandy’s what most girls her age want to be: smart, popular, and dating the star of the football team. With such bright futures ahead of them, the least thing she expected was to become pregnant. Her mother is amazingly supportive, but the sperm donor thinks of no one but himself. He even has the audacity to inquire who the father of the baby is!

Teen pregnancy is not new and the abortion debate is not so black and white. Years later, Sandy is a school teacher who tries to help a girl who became pregnant through rape. Sandy’s pro-life, but she’s crossing boundaries that can cause her to lose her job or worse. She’s made some difficult choices in her life and she feels obligated to help the teenager explore the very options that others are trying to discourage.

Those who are pro-choice may find some issues with this novel, but regardless, anyone can sympathize with the difficult choices that many mothers have to make. I remember when my partner was pressuring me to have an abortion and in desperation, I had considered it. I spoke with friends who had abortions and many had mixed feelings about them years later. My story may be vastly different from others, though. I went to Planned Parenthood and they told me that it was my body and my choice. That empowered me to keep my child and here we are. No regrets… not even from my partner. But then again, I don’t know how different my views would have been if the pregnancy resulted from a sexual assault.

This was a very engaging, thought-provoking read. If anything, this book will help build empathy for the mothers who are facing difficult choices all over the world. In an ideal world, they would be fully informed in making their decisions, but unfortunately, many choices will be made through desperation. Even if we don’t agree with the decisions that are made, there are women who still need our support.
